WhatsApp has finally embraced the high-definition revolution. As of this week, the messaging giant has rolled out support for HD videos. Before you begin to question the date on your calendar, rest assured that we are indeed still in 2023.
It’s just that one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms has taken its time catching up with this feature.
Last week, WhatsApp made waves by adding support for high-resolution images, and they promised to follow suit with videos in the near future. Well, the future is now, as WhatsApp has officially initiated the rollout of HD video support.
However, keep in mind that this is a staged release, so it might take a little while before you see the HD video option on your account. The good news is that both iOS and Android users can anticipate this upgrade.
With this new feature, you’ll have the option to share videos in glorious 720p resolution, a significant step up from the previous standard of 480p. To utilize this feature, select the video or videos you wish to share, then tap the shiny new ‘HD’ button located at the top of your screen.

A dialogue box will appear, allowing you to confirm whether you want to share in Standard Quality or HD Quality (equivalent to 480p or 720p). Additionally, this dialogue will display the file sizes associated with each choice, helping you make an informed decision.
Much like HD images, all images, and all videos on WhatsApp, these HD videos are protected with end-to-end encryption. This means that your shared videos are secure and only visible to the intended recipient.
To make it clear that you’re receiving an HD video, WhatsApp thoughtfully adds an ‘HD’ badge to the video so that you can appreciate the enhanced quality.
